Double Identity by Margaret Peterson Haddix April 14, 2010

Double Identity is about a girl named Bethany. Bethany’s parents were always sensitive about safety. “hold my hand while crossing the street”. and things like that. Bethany noticed that her mother has been crying a lot lately. One day her dad rushed both of them into the car and drove many miles without even stopping.

Nobody talked the whole time, not even Bethany. She hadn’t seen a street sign in like forever. Finally the car stopped. Bethany saw her dad walk up to a house and knock on the door. An older woman who bethany had never met before opened the door and immediatley gave bethany’s dad a hug.

Bethany heard them talking for a while, but could only get fragments of what they were saying. But Bethany latched onto something interesting, her father saying:”No, she doesn’t know about Elizabeth yet.”when her dad came back to the car he said to Bethany “you’re going to be staying with your aunt for a while.” So for the next few days, whenever Bethany went outside, people would be staring at her as if she were a ghost. Could this have anything to do with the Elizabeth person her dad was talking about. Find out in Double Identity!

Double Identity was a great book that could latch onto the minds of any reader who is a big fan of suspense books, and Margaret Peterson Haddix books. When I was reading this book I just couldn’t put the book down. I hope everbody gets to enjoy this book as much as I did.

Twelve year old Britt has an ordinary life with her single mom and older brother Bran. One day her mom’s friend suggests they move to Florida with her. They look into it and decide they want to go when they find a free college class on how to be a doctor for single moms. That is what Britt’s mom has always wanted to do. As they are about to leave for Florida their friend decides not to go. They decide to go anyway.

They go to Florida and like everything… except their apartment building where they hear fights and gun shots. When Bran gets a job mowing the lawn for the Marquises, older people in a nice neighborhood they get to know him a little and trust him. They ask him to house sit for them while they are in New York at their other house for the summer. He decides to do it and goes home. That night he tells Britt and his mom that they are moving because he got a house sitting job. A few days later Bran takes Britt to see the house they are watching and living in. Thy go into the backyard and are about to go inside when Mr. Marquis walks out. Bran gets scared and tells him he is checking on the house because the Marquises were supposed to be in New York. Right after Britt introduces her self Bran tells her to wait out front while he talks to Mr. Marquis. She gets really suspicious because Bran is usually really nice.

A week later they move into the house. They all love it… but  right after they unpack Bran starts acting weird again. He moves things like pictures, ceramic cats and older things into boxes. One night Britt tries to get into the shed where Bran is hiding the boxes. It is dark so she doesn’t notice it is locked. She can’t get it open so she decides to wait outside and watch the stars. She falls asleep in the lawn chair she is in. In the middle of the night she wakes up and sees the door to the shed open. She goes in and sees Bran going through the boxes. He turns round and tells her to go to bed. She goes to her room but doesn’t get in bed. She sits by the door and listens to her brother bring the boxes into his room.T the next morning when her mom is at school and Bran is at work she gets bored. She goes to the neighbor and asks if there areany kids to babsit. The woman lughs and tells her there are only older people around there neighborhood. Instead of of baby sitting she buys things for the people who have trouble getting around. Oneday after her brother had left she went into his room to try to find the boxes. She goes over to the closet after not finding them anywhere else and finds tere is  lock on it. She can’t do anything so she goes to the laundromat to do laundry. When she is about to put Brans pants i she hears a jingle. She looks in the pockets and finds 3 keys. When she gets home she takes one of the keys and opens the shed. Britt goes through the boxes but doesn’t find anything interesting. She goes inside and opens Brans closet with the other key. This time there are pictures of the Marquises and their family…  but on the cover of one of the photo albums it says MARCUS FAMILY MEMORIES. Right as Britt is about to come out of the closet bran comes home. She jumps in the closet so he doesn’t see her. The next day Britt wants to earn more  about the Marus’… NOT the Marquises. She goes into her mom’s room and goes through a stack of papers. She finds a paper of her mom’s from high school. The name on it says Rebecca Jane Marcus. She knows it is her mom. Right then Bran walks in. She tells him she knows they are staying at their mom’s parents house. Bran gets upset and tells her not to tell their mom.

To find out what happens read this excellent book. I really enjoyed it. it is inspiring that  someone would go through so much trouble to help his family. i recommend this  book to everyone. It is a mystery, realistic fiction and many more. This is a fabulous book.
